DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Paul
Sweeney, Laurel, MD, who departed us this
week.
Paul was a leader that many deaf people
never knew about. Yes, he was well known in
the Washington, DC deaf community, but not
as a leader. But he was a leader!
After graduating from Gallaudet, he landed
a job as a Chemist with the state of Maryland.
And after some 20 years working in the labs,
he was promoted to a supervisory position.
He supervised the work of some 15-20
chemists under his wing, many of them with
doctorates. and resentful for being passed
over.
Paul did not ask, nor lobby for this prized
supervisory position; it was given to him,
as a surprise. He continued as supervisor for
the next 15 years until he retired.
Also, another thing about Paul that many
of us never knew about. He was a Deaflympics
athlete! At the 1975 Winter Deaflympics, he
was member of the pioneering USA speedskating
team.
So far reaching was Paul's low key popularity
with the Deaf Community that his memorial services
earlier today was packed.
We will miss you, Paul!
...
Recently a Gallaudet administrator privately told
DeafDigest:
We cannot afford a third student rebellion over
a new Gallaudet president
Keeping this in mind, Ben Soukup, chair,
Gallaudet Board of Trustees, is planning
a 2-day retreat for trustees - to make sure
the upcoming presidential selections process
runs smoothly with no snags. And to involve
input from everyone - students, faculty, staff,
alumni and friends.

More on the case of the Deaf Rochester driver
caught and ticketed for driving without a
hearing aid a couple of weeks ago.
Robert Rademacher was the person that was
ticketed. It was not his first ticket. As a young
man attending NTID in the eighties, he was ticketed
for the first time for this same offense.
Are Rochester cops guilty of deaf-profiling? Or
is it that the New York State regulations on
hearing aid driving requirements are flawed?
At any rate, Robert is mounting a campaign to
have this flawed requirement removed from the
state DMV books.
Looking back, DeafDigest editor lived in
New York City while growing up so many years
ago. And like with many inexperienced drivers,
he was often stopped by police on a variety of driving
offenses - but never just once was it for a hearing
aid violation!

Is it possible for a nation to be considered
first rate (high standard of living) and to be
considered third world - at the same time?
This is in reference to New Zealand! This
nation has been rated as one of the best in
the world. Yet for the needs of the deaf, it
might very well as be considered the worst!
For Marlin Flanagan, a deaf resident of
New Zealand, the nation is the worst when it
comes to providing interpreters. The nation
only has a handful of interpreters. Marlin
wants to become a mechanic and needs to attend
a technical school. He cannot, because of
shortage of interpreters.
...
The cattle is very important to the financial
well being of Arizona Schools for the Deaf and
Blind.
The deaf and the cattle? Not quite, but the
cattle need land to graze. And they graze on
the state's open land.
Because the state constitution do not
recognize trust-land conservation, this
referendum is put up for vote in the coming
election.
Ranchers pay for lease for use of the
land for their cattle. Part of the money
paid by ranchers go to the state schools
for the deaf and the blind.
This is the reason for the Deaf and the
Cattle tango!
THE MISS DEAF WORLD PAGEANT
The 2008 Miss Deaf World pageant took place in
Prague, the Czech Republic.
A deaf woman from Great Britain won first
place.
No winner from USA? Yes, but because no one
from USA was entered in the pageant. In fact
only 16 nations were entered, but none from USA.
Why no one from USA? Good question. Poor
planning? Or conflict with Miss Deaf America
which took place at the same time and only had
22 contestants!
Are you interested in helping deaf children in Africa to gain an
education?
Here is an opportunity! Aloysius and Margaret Bibum have established
the Buea School for the Deaf (BSD) in Cameroon, Central West Africa.
In five years, Enrollment has increased from 13 students to 84, with
requests for more children to be admitted.
(There is no support in the public school system for deaf children).
Some parents cannot afford to pay any of the costs, some pay only a
portion, leaving the school with significant challenges in covering
teacher salaries, rent of current school buildings, and costs for
room and board.
We are pleased to announce that the Friends of the Buea School for the
Deaf, Inc. (FoBSD), has been recognized by the U.S. government as a
501(c)(3) organization.
This makes all donations through FoBSD tax exempt.
A $10 check will make you a member, enabling you to receive updates of
progress. All additional donations will be used to support the school.
Visit the website and look for Project #112 to learn more.
We are especially pleased to announce that with the encouragement of
Dr. I. King Jordan, Doris Stelle, a supporter in the Washington DC area,
collaborated with Aloy Bibum to petition The Johnson Scholarship
Foundation for help.
The Foundation generously responded with a grant of $30,000. This
strong support will help the school to purchase land, the first step
in moving from cramped quarters.
Funds are also needed for construction and daily expenses. Your
generous help can make a real difference in the lives of deaf children

SOME CAN USE VOICE TELEPHONE; SOME CAN'T USE IT
There are deaf people with 85dB and higher hearing
loss, but can use voice telephone with hearing aid
and without interpreter and without video relay.
There are other deaf people with 50dB loss but
cannot understand voices on telephone.
Why? Always a mystery.
RADIATION TREATMENT CORRECTING DEAFNESS?
Is there such a thing as a series of radiation
treatments correcting deafness?
A story carried in one of these newspapers said:
deafness, a condition which later was corrected by radiation
treatments
A google search came up with this information:
For many years radiation was considered good medical
therapy for some of these problems. For example deafness
was improved when radium treatments shrank enlarged
lymph tissue compressing the internal ear canal
This was the exception. A majority of google hits
disclosed radiation as the cause, not as the cure,
of deafness!
A NEW ENGINEERING FIELD ON BEHALF OF THE DEAF
There are many fields in engineering - mechanical,
electrical, civil, chemical and so on.
Is there a new field called "Cochlear Implant
engineering"?
Not a joke. The Royal Academy of Engineers
in England has honored Christofer Toumzou for
his work with first cochlear chips which is
used in Cochlear Implants.
Always thought CI is more associated with
medicine and audiology, not with engineering?

GREEN HEARING AIDS
Green hearing aids? Yes, and it has nothing
to do with color. It also has nothing to do
with saving hearing aid batteries because of
environmental concerns.
It has a lot to do with solar-powered
hearing aids, which is what Howard Weinstein,
not deaf, is planning to distribute.
Weinstein, a Canadian, is in Africa, planning
to build a hearing aid factory. He is hoping that
his solar-powered hearing aids will become
popular among deaf and hard of hearing Africans.
MANY FAMOUS PEOPLE HAVE A LINK WITH THE DEAF
below is more of a non-link, than a link
- Jesse Jackson, famous activist
How many times has Jesse rushed to the front lines, a
and grandstanded on a cause on behalf of the deaf -

funds for agencies for the deaf?
Never!
WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

I wish I had your job since it involves no stress!
replied the interpreter:
Huh!

MISLEADING DESCRIPTION
We are always reading about the deaf (especially
the youngsters) "leading silent lives".
Silent lives? Many young deaf kids are just as
noisy as hearing kids; they are also just as
mischievous and rambunctious as hearing kids.
For these noisy deaf kids to lead silent
lives is rather misleading a description of
their youthfulness!
COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
In order to achieve the speed necessary to caption at over
200 words per minute, stenocaptioners write whole syllables or
words in a single stroke.
They stroke multiple keys at one time, much like a chord on a
piano. This is different from someone typing on a typewriter
who is typing one letter at a time.
The captioner uses his or her left hand for initial consonants,
the thumbs for vowels, and the right hand for final consonants
If we look at the word "sat," the "S" would be stroked with the
left hand. The "A" would be stroked with the thumb. The "T"
would be stroked with the right hand.
All of these keys would be depressed at the same time, not one
letter at a time.

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
The Washingtonian Magazine, July 1998 edition has published
results of an informal poll among Congressional staffers - the
bests and the worsts - such as Best Leader, Worst Follower, etc?
Well, two members of the Congress that serve on the Gallaudet
Board of Trustees have also been rated by Hill staffers in this
poll.
Here are the findings:
- Meanest member of the House - David Bonior was rated as the
4th in this category
- Worst Follower (Senate) - John McCain, tops
- Workhorse (Senate) - McCain, 2nd
- Showhorse (Senate) - McCain, 2nd
- Hottest Temper (Senate) - McCain, 2nd

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:
Apparently word is out among thieves in Los
Angeles that deaf people wear Bluetooth headsets.
There has been a rash of robberies of Bluetooth
headsets ripped off heads of people.
Only it is that what has been ripped off were
Cochlear Implants that the thieves thought were
the same as Bluetooth headsets.
These $7,000 devices have been rendered useless
to these thieves.
And by the way the $7,000 price tag was quoted
in a newspaper story. Thought these CI pieces were
$50,000 apiece, not measly $7,000 apiece!

A Vocational Rehabilitation counselor's pet peeve:
A client gives you grief for insisting on an in-person
meeting instead of a video meeting. Granted, videos
are a good tool, but there are times in which you have
to see them in person no matter what.
Getting wrinkles and time lines as you get older? Have
blemishes for no reason? Want to improve the condition of
your skin? Do you need advice for your particular skin
problems (dry, oily, flaky, dull, counteracting sun and
age damage, etc.). Shirley Platt has been a Mary Kay Skin
Care Consultant for 4 years. A native of Maryland, and
presently a resident of Ogden, Utah, she is deaf and is fluent
in sign language.
Her clients are all over the country because it's so much
easier to consult one-on-one using the videophone (or in
person). We all know how hard it is for deaf people to work
with a hearing person who doesn't know how to sign.
"My biggest challenge is correcting the misinformation that
deaf clients have received over the years from their hearing
consultants who don't sign, or who don't take the time to
explain the products and what they are used for, how they
work and so forth. Many of my deaf clients were putting
skin care products on their face in the wrong order, or in
the wrong place."
"I've been using Mary Kay products myself for more than 30
years and my skin is in great condition! I couldn't
ask for better skin. Call me if I can help you!"
"The company is really special to me because the Mary Kay Ash
Foundation funds efforts to end domestic violence, and
sponsors research for breast cancer."
