Watch out for ARMS

Many Adjustable Rate Mortgages are re-calculating to over 7.5%
and higher.

There are much lower rates available.

This is the time to plan.  If your loan is set to adjust in the
next 12 months, call us for a confidential and absolutely free
analysis to determine if a refinance makes sense.  Sometimes it
does.  Sometimes it does not.  We'll help you make a wise decision
on how best to manage your mortgage account.

Kramer Financial is pleased to be a partner with Access National
Mortgage Company (ANM) to provide home loan services to
customers.

One of two key factors to our client's satisfaction is that ANM
has access to 50 different lenders and they are in an excellent
position to choose a lender with the lowest rates and closing
costs.  Second is our joint commitment to our customer's needs.

News of the Week

Many deaf people aspire to own successful
home-based businesses that provide them with
comfortable income.
Judith Bice, Jemison, Alabama, is a successful
home-based businesswoman. Starting ever so slowly
until the business grew, she sews hand-made clothes
with her sewing machine. Her clothing products are
sold on-line. It is a full range choice of clothes
for infants up to teens.

...

The Deaf and the Hearing Dentist. Or is it the
Deaf and the Deaf Dentist?
There was a story that ran in the newspapers
that hearing loss may threaten many hearing
dentists.
It is not because of patients screaming
with pain. It is because of high-speed
drilling tools that generate a high level
of noise.
Deaf dentists? We have some, and they
are not bothered by these high speed
drilling tools. With some hearing
dentists it may be a different story.

...

Players in the National Football League
that use ASL during the games may be punished?
The NFL is cracking down on players that use
gang-related sign language during the games.
The fear is that these NFL security people
may confuse ASL with a series of gang-related
signs!
This is not a joke. From time to time, we
have Coda players in the NFL. The last one
was Stefan Lefors, now playing in the
Canadian Football League.

...

   Unforgettable black and white pictures
of famous people like Nat King Cole,
Sammy Davis, Jr and other entertainment
luminaries are on display at the Smokestack
in Lower Briggate in the town of Leeds in
England.
These pictures were taken by Terry Cryer,
who was described during the fifties and
sixties as the "The Dean of UK jazz and blues
photographers".
Cryer is deaf, been deaf since the age of
one. He does not know British Sign Language.

STOPPING AND CHATTING
Jack Hawkins, not deaf, is the chancellor of
Troy University in Alabama. He likes to walk across
the campus, stopping the students to talk with
them.
He will use sign language to talk with a deaf
employee when he sees him walking nearby.
Jack was the former president of Alabama
Institute for the Deaf and Blind before becoming
Troy University chancellor. He still remembers sign
language from 20 years ago.

COMPARING AN AUDIOLOGIST WITH A HEARING AID DEALER
Could we compare an audiologist with a hearing aid
dealer?
Well, a DeafDigest subscriber noticed that many audiologists
are secretive, not willing to give up their trade secrets.
Hearing aid dealers, on the other hand, are willing to share
facts and details about patient's hearing losses!

HORSE TRADING IS NOT A JOKE IN GHANA
We often read the phrase "horse trading" and
immediately associate it with a sleazy deal making.
Not quite that so in Ghana. The State School
for the Deaf, in the Ashaiman Municipality,  is
involved with horse trading. It is for a good
reason.
Many parents of the deaf are too poor to
afford tuition for their deaf children.
The school accepts donations of cutlasses,
hoes, pick-axes, wheelbarrows, shovels,
spikes, rakes and tanks - in exchange for
admission of deaf children to classes!

A LIPREADING EXERCISE IN FRUSTRATION
   DeafDigest editor recalls one lipreading
episode that was ever so frustrating.
It was not with a hearing person, but with
an oralist deaf person.
The oral deaf person was trying to say she
went to a summer camp. And the name of the
camp was _ _ _ _ _ _ ?

   She was trying to say:

Fresh Air Camp

The words coming out of her mouth read
like this:

Fish Hair Camp

   This lipreading struggle went on
endlessle. The DeafDigest editor
gave up in frustration, not able to make
sense out of what she was trying to say.
Weeks later, there was a newspaper
story of a fund raising appeal for
donations to help campers attend the
Fresh Air Camp!
It just had to be a newspaper story
that would solve the lipreading puzzle.

ANOTHER DEAF BUYER
DeafDigest few weeks ago mentioned a deaf buyer
who is more of a numbers cruncher instead of being
an on-the-road buyer.
Another deaf buyer surfaced this week. He said

I buy stuff for a very small niche clothing store.
I have people that know me for my deafness and buy
for me; other people come to us when they have
estate sales; I go to other small niche clothing
stores, flea markets and bazaars and negotiate
deals via pen and pad. I, however, avoid
auctions; very difficult to keep up with these
rapid fire bids.

She did not want to be identified by her
name nor the small town she works in.

BECOMING AN INTERPRETER IN THE COURT ROOM
Interpreters that work in the court room
must be rated on the SC:L level. SC:L means
Specialist Certificate: Legal.
How tough is it to become a SC:L? Said
one interpreter:

I must become an attorney first in order to understand
these legal phrases!

TO LOBBY OR NOT TO LOBBY
   Some deaf-related agencies spend time on lobbying;
some don't.
Is time on lobbying worth it? Look at the
mortgage crisis. The USA government is bailing out
Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac with our tax money, and
is helping smooth out problems at Lehman Brothers.
But at the same time, IndyMac is drowning with no
help from the feds.
Why? Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and Lehman Brothers
all have huge budgets devoted to lobbying
costs. IndyMac didn't.
At one deaf agency, the executive director,
not deaf, spends a lot of time making contacts
everywhere. And he gets the funds necessary to
get the agency up and running. Other agency
heads don't, and consequently struggle with
finances.
Bottom line - it is worth it.

INTERRUPTED DURING A RESTAURANT DINNER
DeafDigest editor and his wife was having
a dinner at a nice restaurant in Washington, DC
with another deaf couple.
A hearing woman, sitting at a table nearby,
came over and interrupted the dinner conversation.
She said that she came to the restaurant from
a conference (not deaf-related) that took place
at the Gallaudet Conference Center. She said it
was the best conference she ever attended and that
she will always remember Gallaudet for it.
Interesting, but what if the ASL-speaking
diners were NTID/RIT graduates, not Gallaudet
graduates?
The woman would have no way of knowing it.
And besides, the numbers of NTID/RIT alumni
members residing in the Washington, DC area
is high. And they do dine out at these fine
restaurants!

LEARNING SIGNS AT LATE AGE
Evelyn Glennie, the world's most famous
percussionist, is deaf.
At the age of 42, she is trying to learn
British Sign Language. She became deaf at the
age of 12 but never learned signs while growing
up, focusing her energies toward music.
The older the person is, the harder it is to
learn signs. It is equivalent to a 42 year old
hearing person learning a new language in a new
country.
   It ain't easy.

A CAUSE OF DEAFNESS
An article mentioned a deaf person and said the cause
of his deafness was dropsy on the brain.
Dropsy? Never heard of that word so looked it up.
It more or less is like Edema, which is a fluid
swelling.
How come we don't read anything about dropsy?
This article was written in Year 1830!

Hot DeafNews boring, but important!

The FCC recently issued an announcement that
certified a listing of state relay centers.

 ...

Deaf Picture of the Week:

It is Deaf Pictures of the Week, not Deaf Picture
of the Week!

Do surf on:
http://www.ntid.rit.edu/alumni/reunion/svp_photos.php

How many NTID friends could you identify in these
pictures?

..

Question of the week:

Q. I participate in some on-line programs over
the internet. These presentations are not
captioned. Could I get closed captions during these
on-line sessions?

A. This has becoming a hot issue among Deaf Activists,
that while we have captions on TV and movies, these
web sessions are far behind. There are rumblings
of the FCC stepping in and ordering captions.
DeafDigest, however, is not holding its breath.

send your questions to mailto:barry@deafdigest.com

the most interesting questions may be answered
in future DeafDigest editions. Thank you.

..

Wish List of the Week:

that Evelyn Glennie should have immediately learned
signs at the age of 12 until waiting until the age
of 42.

On the flip side, if she learned signs at 12,
would it prevent her from becoming a famous
percussionist?

....

DeafHistory - Looking Back:

Year 1969 - Hyer Boot Company, Olathe, Kansas
was sold. It ended an era where original
owner, Charles Hyer, not deaf, taught leathermaking
at the school and hired many deaf people to work
for him.

...

Deaf Alternative History - What if:

Maggie Lee Sayre, a deaf woman, did not pursue
photography as a hobby while spending 51 years helping
out the family fishing business on a houseboat that
navigated the rivers in Kentucky and Tennessee?

The hearing historians would not have preserved the
history of houseboats on the rivers in Kentucky and
Tennessee!  These houseboats disappeared without
a trace in the 1950's - and there were no pictures
to document these lives.

Somehow a historian stumbled on her treasure trove
of pictures, taken with an old Kodak Brownie camera
based on a hearsay by a neighbor. These pictures
caused quite a stir.

Sayre graduated from Kentucky School for the Deaf,
and except for her deceased deaf sister, had no
contact with the deaf in these 51 years! She
passed away few years ago.

...

Deaf and the Money:

Marlee Matlin is a famous deaf actress and a mother.
How much money were scandal magazines willing to
pay for pictures of her babies?

Zero dollars.

Angelina Jolie is a famous hearing actress and
a mother. How much money were scandal magazines
willing to pay for pictures of her babies?

eleven million dollars.

Why?

...

DeafNumbers of the Week:

New Zealand has two islands. The smaller island is
South Island, with a population of a bit over
one million people.

Only 4 interpreters serve the deaf population of
South Island.
